Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
Well said Russ. You are about 2 years older than me so we were kids in a similar era where Pele had already retired but when playing football at school or in the park in the 80s it was often Pele who kids would pretend to be even though we didn’t have the access to watch live football on TV all year round or have the internet to read up on these things.

The words mythical and legendary perfectly sum it up to what he meant for kids and adults all around the world.

He was the first footballing superstar on a global scale.

Those that want to compare him to Messi & Ronaldo just remember that you can only work with the tools or environment you are given/lived in.

Transport Messi & Ronaldo back to the 60s, 70s or 80s where they get next to no protection from the referees so get kicked all over the pitch, the pitches are no where near as good, there are no such thing as fitness coaches and chefs to advise on diets to prolong careers, medicine/physios weren’t as developed as they are now. Would they be as good?

It was a different world.

Pele was the best player of his era, Maradona was the best player of his era and Messi/Ronaldo were the best of their era.

I'm older than you, by the way.

Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
I might have just forgot, but I don't remember him being mentioned much. You talk about 82 but that was 12 years after Pele's last real stand, not sure if kids gave too much attention to a player that hadn't done much for 12 years, who they probably wouldn't have even seen on the box? Usually it would be the here and now players that were the hero's.

Manuel 11:05 Fri Dec 30

Well I find that odd.

Most kids around my street shouted "Pele!" whenever they attempted a fluffed up over-head kick. For years growing up that technique was known as a 'Pele'. Then that was fully cemented with Escape to Victory. My grandad had an old magazine full of photo's of Pele playing, all in black and white, which added to the mystery. My dad's mate had a poster of him up in his garage.

He moved to NY Cosmos the year I was born and I even recall seeing photo's of him playing for them some years later.

I may be a few years older? Not sure. But for me and nearly everyone else I know around my age, Pele's mythical status cemented him as the best. As you say, shortly after the likes of Cruyff, Platini, Maradona and co followed.

I don't really remember him, but can see he was special.

Would have struggled in the modern game.

Imagine what a Chris Wood or Michail Antonio would have done in the olden days.

Interesting that since we are around the same age, as I don't recall hardly anyone talking about Pele much at all, maybe the old man, but that aside no, not at school or the kids in the street etc. I never remember thinking much about Pele or kids pretending to me him. Brazil hadn't even won the world for 12 years since 82.

Maradona was the first mythical type of player I can recall from overseas, Cruyff and Platini to an extent.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
For me, despite what other players have achieved. Pele will always be the best. Simply because he is my earliest memory of football. I can recall the '82 WC (only just). Was 7 and on holiday in Spain when WC was on.

But way before that my dad had showed me photo's of Pele. My grandad spoke of him with so much compassion and respect. All the other dad's on the estate the same. All the kids knew Pele was the best.

He became mythical. Legendary. Almost alien. Seeing the grainy footage of him playing and those goals he scored. The '58 and '62 footage. And then being shown the Brazil '70 footage. That final against Italy. Brazil's colours, the vivid green of the pitch, the black and white ball. The noise of the crowd. Like nothing most young kids had ever seen.

Then came his appearance in Escape to Victory with 'Our Bob'. The cameo performances with the tactics blackboard and that legendary over-head kick scene.

Yes, its all very sentimental. I realise that. But for kids of my generation he will always be the best because he was so legendary and mythical. Kids these days have football on tap. They have social media access that brings them almost up close and personal to the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

But for me, Pele's myth and the distance he was from me will always make him so much more than just a great player. For me, Pele is the king and will always be the best.

Why can’t we except all these greats that get mentioned have their place in football history and the late great Pele kicked it all off to become the beautiful game?

RIP Pele

I’d put Cantona over Gazza….. But it’s close.

Anyway get back to your Messi jigsaw puzzle, I’m going to bed.

Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
If you're talking about naturally gifted footballers then it's impossible to ignore Messi or it just likes you have an agenda against him, or are just clueless to be honest. Look at how small Messi is, and not even bulky like Maradona was, and while he ain't slow he isn't the quickest either, so all that he achieved was through his natural talent.

Gazza should get a mention if talking about naturally gifted, plus others of course.

Let’s keep it real Messi finally had a good World Cup, he has been toilet in all the others.

George Best would run rings around defenders, he did it week in and week out. Scored some unbelievable goals too.

He played at the highest club level back in the day, he was unplayable….. his skill level was off the charts as was his thinking and technique, he was miles above anyone else on his day…. And he did it all in spite of himself… Him, Pele and Maradonna are the most naturally gifted footballers I’ve seen.

I said the other week that I would not be following the World Cup - that's a million miles from "not watching football".

Now why don't you go start a thread all about me within which you can be as bitchy as you fucking like rather that stinking up every thread with your immature bile?

Manuel 7:58 Fri Dec 30
Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
As I said you're all about sentiment, fella, and Messi was a different character to them three, never seeked the limelight as such. But I take your point about the magic of them three, but that is mainly due to no live TV in those days and not seeing them too often, if those three you mention were in our living rooms every week they wouldn't carry the same nostalgia and mystique.

And let's be honest saying Best was better than Messi surely has to be a wind up, as good as he was he retired at 27, Messi won the world cup at 35!

Nutsin 7:46 Fri Dec 30
Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
I remember the buzz around Maradonna, Pele and George Best, Messi has never come close to that type of adoration or recognition.

The magic that Best, Pele and Maradonna provided on the field we’re on a different level….. Messi doesn’t compare, sorry son!

Manuel 7:42 Fri Dec 30
Re: Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) has bought the farm
Nuts - We've been over this many times, it's based on pure ability, trophies won, with club, country, and personal like 7 ballon dors. Goals records, appearance records, including the world cup where he has scored more goals than Maradona, and world class performances season after season for 18 years. He was scoring hat-tricks against Real Madrid 16 years ago. Voted best player at the 2014 WC and so on. Nobody can top that, of course he's the GOAT.

I think you have a touch of the Sold's about you where you can't bring yourself to admit that someone from the current era is the best and you are all about sentiment, and your top 3 ever kind of backs that up.

Now off you go and disagree :-)

Your whole post was funny Manuel.

You said Pele was up there but Messi was definitely the GOAT.

Why are you so insistent that Messi is the GOAT ffs?

It’s weird.
